Thiru Kalvanoor Divyadesam - Adi Varaha Perumal Temple - The History
When the Asuras and
Devas churning Parkadal to obtain the Nectar, Aalahala Visham, the poison came out
first which turned the colour of Almighty from His Swedhavarna Posture into Dark and Dull. Later Goddess Mahalakshmi came out of the ocean
with her Golden Complexion which made Almighty to feel bad that He was not
match to her and cursed her to lose all her charming. Lakshmi became Aroopavadhi and
came down to Kanchipuram where she was asked by Kamatchi Amman to remain next
to her in Gayathri Mandapam so that the devotees who receive Kumkum as prasadham
in her shrine will offer some portion to her which will regain her beauty and in turn she
was asked to bless the devotees with prosperity. Goddess Lakshmi acted accordingly as she was advised. In
the course of time she regained all her beauty and became Soundhrya Lakshmi.
Meanwhile Paranthaman felt very bad that He had cursed the consort and realized that
without her He cannot exist. He went for a search all over and at last He found her in
the Gayathri Mandapam at Kanchi. By seeing the Almighty who came in search of her,
Goddess became so happy and in love she called Him as “Kalva” means the lovable
thief. Hence the place is being worshipped as Thirukalvanoor, the One and Only
Divyadesam among the 108 Divyadesams where he is blessing in Smaller For as Adi Varahar. Besides, this is the one and only divyadesam located inside the
saivite temple Kanchi Kamatchi Amman Temple and the poojas too are being
performed by the saivites. It is also believed that on the request of Goddess
Akilandeswari, Paranthaman gave her His Dharshan in all His Postures - Nindra Thirukkolam,
Irundha Thirukkolam and Kidantha Thirukkolam. The Temple tank is being worshipped as Nithya Pushkarini. |
